The enhanced RR engine features BMW's unique ShiftCam technology for varying the valve timing and valve lift on the intake side. This is a three-piece intake switching camshaft that has two cams mounted on a shift segment for each intake valve:
- a torque cam and
- a power cam with optimally designed cam geometry in each case. The gearshift speed of the BMW ShiftCam of the RR (from model year 2023) is 9,000 rpm as before (not for China and Taiwan).
Via an axial displacement of the switching-cam segment, the intake valves are actuated by either the torque or the power cam in just 10 ms, depending on the rotational speed. The axial displacement is effected via 2 shift gates on the switching-cam segment and 2 electromechanical actuators. The different design of the two intake cams causes different valve timings and valve lifts. While the full load cam provides the maximum valve lift, a reduced valve lift is available via the torque cam.
